A shocking skit in the annual New Year’s Day Mummers Parade in Philadelphia stirred controversy by mocking Caitlyn Jenner, drawing scorn from politicians and others across social media.

The Finnegan New Year’s Brigade float in what may be the country’s oldest folk parade featured a man dressed as Bruce Jenner, complete with a fake Olympic medal and a USA shirt.

Mummers engulfed him before he reemerged to the tune “Dude Looks Like a Lady” and frolicked about dressed in a white outfit mimicking Caitlyn Jenner’s dress on the July 2015 cover of Vanity Fair.

After taking flak for its nearly all-white, all-male line-up in 2015, the City of Brotherly Love’s most famous parade sought to diversify this year by adding two Hispanic groups and one African American drill team.

A mostly male LGBT group joined the parade four years ago, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

The Mummers Parade has been held in Philadelphia for 115 years.

The event typically involves strange and festive costuming, as befits its name which comes from masked entertainment bands called mummers who roamed Europe in the Middle Ages.
