This time last year, Suits actress Meghan Markle was quietly dating Prince Harry.

Her life would change when the press found out about their relationship, and Prince Harry would confirm it through a statement in November.

He asked for privacy: “Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her,” his Kensington Palace statement read. “It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm.”

Markle, who is just now talking about her relationship publicly for the first time to Vanity Fair for its October 2017 issue, admits that the scrutiny and intense coverage of her in the U.K. press isn’t always easy to take.

Markle says she and Prince Harry started dating in July 2016.

Markle has a strategy for coping with the tabloids: just not reading them.

She and Prince Harry, at the heart of it, are just like any other couple trying to work things out, with the challenge of fame and royalty tacked on.

“I can tell you that at the end of the day I think it’s really simple: We’re two people who are really happy and in love,” Markle says.

“We were very quietly dating for about six months before it became news, and I was working during that whole time, and the only thing that changed was people’s perception. Nothing about me changed. I’m still the same person that I am, and I’ve never defined myself by my relationship.”
