Billy Bob Thornton plays a fallen lawyer out for justice in “Goliath,” David E. Kelley’s latest legal drama.

David E. Kelley is back with a new legal drama, starring Billy Bob Thornton as Billy McBride, a down-on-his luck, boozed-up lawyer seeking his last shot at redemption by going after the towering Los Angeles firm he helped build.

William Hurt plays the former partner, scarred and glowering, intent on destroying Billy, who takes meetings at his favorite watering hole, opposite the Santa Monica motel he calls home.

Will it be Mr. Kelley’s next real hit eight years after “Boston Legal”? Since it has a sort of split personality – one part L.A. noir; the other, hyped-up legal show – and a needlessly complex narrative, “The jury is still out,” Mike Hale wrote in The New York Times.

Then t’s creepy Uncle Jim, who aspires to manage Miranda through a “Five-phase plan for fame.” The result, alas, is “a lot of concentrated sourness,” Jim Poniewozik wrote in The Times.
