Wednesday was incendiary at the intersection of rap music and politics, when tweets from Kanye West and Chance the Rapper raised quite a ruckus.
The day began with West, who issued a series of tweets ranging from one that appeared to criticize former President Barack Obama to one that many suggested showed solidarity with President Donald Trump, who then thanked West for the tweet.
Interpretations of the West tweet varied, but the overall trend was overwhelmingly negative.
The list of prominent black artists who unfollowed West on Twitter so far include Drake, Jaden Smith, Janelle Monae, Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna and The Weeknd.
Then came a tweet from Chance that caused many to react in a way that, while not as intense and negative as the reaction to West’s tweet, still caused consternation among the Chicago rapper and activist’s fan base.
