Instead, D’Angelo performs live for Verzuz at the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem to take a crew of still-unknown friends with him. Since the pandemic and the quarantine measures that followed, live music and touring as we know it all came to a halt, the Verzuz battles began. Of course, as with most subjective battles of this nature, the real winners are the friends we make along the way. An opportunity to honor the artists who have influenced our lives and made history. Tonight is different, probably because R&B icon D’Angelo is truly unlike any other in terms of talent and status. The DJ will play his warm-up songs, but D’Angelo won’t hit the stage until 7 p.m., so he still has time to set up.
