The case revolves around Knox, a Pittsburgh rapper professionally known as Mayhem Mal, accused of terrorist threats and harassment with lyrics from a 2012 song called “Fuck the Police”. “After prosecutors stated that his words were addressed to police officers in Pittsburgh, Knox was sentenced to 2-6 years in prison in 2014. The dismissal of the Supreme Court follows the recent amicus curiae letter from Mike, the murderer of Run the Jewels, and a group of other rappers, including Chance the Rapper, Meek Mill, 21 Savage, Yo Gotti, Styles P and beyond, in favor of Knox. Knox’s attorney claimed in the appeal that the music was constitutionally protected by the first amendment, but the decision was upheld by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.
