We’d watch Patton Oswalt’s widower comedy.

When Patton Oswalt accepted an Emmy earlier this month for the writing on his variety special, Talking for Clapping, he remarked that “The lights have been turned down 50% in everything” since wife Michelle McNamara died in her sleep six months ago.

Yet the comedian/actor is proving that a little humor can help in such a difficult time.

During a visit to Conan on Monday, he filled the host in on how he’s been coping as a single dad to daughter Alice, 7.

“If I put it in really basic terms, I’m like every bad ’80s sitcom w t’s a dad raising a kid by himself and the mom is somehow … Except my ’80s sitcom sucks. T’s no punchline. T’s a lot of insomnia. T’s a lot of me eating Cheetos for dinner. I’m waiting for my daughter to turn to the camera and say, ‘No wonder I’m in therapy.'”.

Oswalt says he was mentally congratulating himself as they stood in line to board their plane back to L.A. “I did it! I kept her mind off it!” he recalled.

Now Oswalt says he dreads every holiday, fearing the “Polish woman of doom” is going to keep showing up.
