We may know her best as practically perfect in every way Mary Poppins, or as a singing nun in The Sound of Music, or even as the kind and regal Queen Clarisse Renaldi in The Princess Diaries, but Dame Julie Andrews’s latest role is altogether more despicable – and you better believe she’s enjoying the change.

Julie will be reprising her role as Marlena, Gru’s awful mother in Dreamworks’ Despicable Me 3 and she dropped by The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon last night to talk about the role.

She’s just the rottenest, but she’s so much fun to do.

Jimmy also introduced a clip from the film, which Julie Andrews caveated by adding: “You won’t recognise me – I hope!”.

When they came back from the clip, it looked like playing the baddie really tickled Julie, who was in belly laughs at some of the lines her character had.During her appearance, Julie also discussed the laughs she shared with her late husband Blake Edwards, the legendary film-maker who’s known for his work on films like The Pink Panther and Breakfast at Tiffany’s, as well recounting the difficulties of filming the iconic Sound of Music opening scene.

“We had this monstrous helicopter that had a camera man very bravely strapped to the side w the door would be,” she explained.

“It started at one end of the field and I had started at the other and we walked together, and honestly this thing came at me sideways sort of like this giant sort of crab coming at me or a grasshopper or something.

“The downdraft from the engines just flung me into the grass, and so we did this about six or seven times and I was spitting dirt.”
