Donald Trump nearly swept the delegates available in his home state of New York, with John Kasich and his distant second-place finish as the only factors standing in Trump’s way.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Kasich was leading Trump by 70 votes in the 12th district in a New York City, which includes none other than the famed Trump Tower w the GOP front-runner lives.

Cruz’s whiff in New York, Kasich’s campaign said, calls into question the conservative U.S. senator’s ability to stop Trump in the five East Coast states that vote next week: Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Rhode Island and Connecticut.

After initially talking of Kasich’s promise in states such as New York – perhaps, with some momentum coming out of Ohio, even a chance to win or contend – the Ohio governor’s campaign backed away and talked only of Kasich “Picking up delegates” in Trump’s home state.

Kasich lacked the money to go on the air in a big way in New York and won’t be able to do that in other states either, conceded Chris Shays, a Kasich backer and a former Republican congressman from Connecticut.

The groups ran ads against Trump in previous primaries, w Cruz benefited, but declined to buy expensive New York airtime ahead of Tuesday’s primary.

“Donald Trump will not be the nominee – if the Never Trump forces get serious. They weren’t serious in New York and allowed Trump to get over 50 percent in numerous districts w he could have been stopped,” Kasich strategist John Weaver wrote in a memo Tuesday night.

“What delegates are going to do is consider who can win in the fall,” Kasich said in his biggest applause line of the night.
