Bowen, who portrays singer-songwriter Scarlett O’Connor in “Nashville,” will come to Genesee Theatre Sept. 24 with another star of the show, Charles Esten, who portrays Deacon Claybourne.

They will sing fan favorites from the show, as well as new pieces, which could be part of a future solo album, she said.

A breakthrough for her was when she heard Tata Vega sing “Miss Celie’s Blues” in “The Color Purple.” She has said hearing that helped validate what she calls a “Strange, little singing voice.” That voice has a huge range from deep alto to rounded, high soprano tones.

Bowen is a fan of country music, but said it’s not all “Trucks and rhinestones. Country music is so broad.” While the stars of “Nashville” sing that kind of country music, she said, much of it is more “Americana, folksy.”

Bowen auditioned for “Nashville” about five years ago while in Los Angeles.

When she comes to Genesee and other venues to perform, she said she wants to “Say thank you to all those people who petitioned for ‘Nashville’ to come back. It’s just a real special thing.”
