Late-night TV performances by Chris Stapleton are becoming a can’t-miss event, especially as he unveils live versions of the songs on his new album From A Room: Volume 1.

The songwriter appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday night to sing the smoldering “I Was Wrong.” But he also gamely joined the host and guest star Kevin Bacon in a ZZ Top-themed skit – donning an even-longer-than-usual beard.

In the latest installment of the show’s “First Drafts of Rock” segment, the guys recall the Top’s early version of “Legs” – from their diamond-selling 1983 LP Eliminator – originally titled, uh, “Neck.” Stapleton plays the role of guitarist Billy Gibbons, while Fallon is bassist Dusty Hill and fellow Monday night guest Bacon uncannily resembles drummer Frank Beard.

The Kentucky native plays a good straight man as Bacon’s Beard struggles to figure out what he’s supposed to be singing about, but Stapleton makes it look easy, doing a particularly good job of pulling off that tricky white-fur guitar look.

Stapleton later returned to the stage, w he took up the more familiar role of fronting his own band.

This time around, the Grammy winner’s performance was no joke, as Stapleton closes off the soulful “I Was Wrong” with a bone-chilling vocal flourish.

Stapleton, who’s in the midst of his All-American Road Show Tour that kicked off in conjunction with the release of his new album, also just announced a July 18th appearance as the musical guest on NBC’s Today Show.
