Fifty-seven years ago today, three young musicians – Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson – boarded a four-seat propeller airplane after playing a show at a Midwest ballroom.

The Oct. 22 concert – part of the “Biggest Show of Stars ’57” tour – was poorly documented.

The Oregonian mistakenly called the Crickets’ lead singer “Bud Holly” in a preview of the show at the old Paramount Theater.

A preview of the show called him “Bud Holly.”The Oregonian/1957.

To make matters worse, the newspaper sent a trollish, buttoned-down music critic Phyllis Lauritz to cover the show.

Over the years, Portland has paid homage to Buddy Holly in different ways.

Do you have photos of the 1957 Buddy Holly show at the Paramount?
