Rew Garfield is facing major backlash with the LGBTQ community following comments he made regarding his own sexuality and how he prepared to play a gay man in a London stage revival of Tony Kushner’s “Angels in America.”

During a Q&A put on by the UK publication Gay Times, the 33-year-old actor at one point said: “I’m a gay man right now, just without the physical act.”

Garfield, who dated Emma Stone for several years, began, “As far as I know, I am not a gay man.”

While the intent behind Garfield’s off-handed remarks is up for debate, many were offended by the statement, arguing that the star was suggesting that watching “Drag Race” was the extent of gay culture.

Another user wrote that Garfield “Has a very limited view of what being gay ACTUALLY is.”

I mean yeah but that doesn’t change the fact that Andrew Garfield playing a gay man on TV doesn’t suddenly mean he understands oppression.
