Inside Amy Schumer only beat SNL for the “Exceptional Variety Sketch Series” Emmy, suggesting that maybe Comedy Central’s more cinematic sketch shows are starting to take over a spot in American comedy long held primarily by SNL. It will be interesting to find out how Schumer’s generally more polished comedy mixtures using the loveably spotty “let us set on a show” variety at Saturday Night Live.

I am expecting for the best on this one; Schumer is an amazingly game performer, plus it’s always fine to have a host that can bring sketch ideas to the table as well as performing.

Monologue: it is always nice when stand ups who host the show get to simply do their thing throughout the monologue, and Schumer was dependably uproarious.

T were some funny moments, particularly the reappearance of one of Inside Amy Schumer’s finest characters, tiny pageant queen Amy Merriweather Sherman.

Schumer contained yet another little about gun rights in the United States by having six-year-old Sherman ask if she could bring her gun to school, but just as her character was starting to gain traction, she left for someone new to fill in.

In six’s Central show and her stand up, Amy Schumer has revealed an ability to zero in on the type of characters you understand from daily life but perhaps haven’t seen portrayed before, and her dramatic bartender was a perfect example of that.

The manner her and Cecily Strong’s characters fed off of each other’s increasingly dramatic reactions was a perfect recreation of many real life toxic friendships, and Schumer’s delivery was consistently gold with theatrical lines like “You do not transfer a purse, you take it.” Plus, it felt nice, especially with Schumer hosting, to end on a sketch featuring only female cast members.
