According to Alexi Lalas, it takes more courage to defend the national anthem than to kneel. “Today we kneeled to protest racial injustice, police brutality and systemic racism against blacks and coloureds in America,” said the players of Thorns and Courage in a joint statement. “I am defending the national anthem, knowing that it is on my knees that hatred is most evident. Lalas says it takes more courage to get up during the national anthem. I know I won’t be judged, not even by those who kneel. Almost all players knelt down during the national anthem out of solidarity. “Before today’s game, it was not customary to defend the national anthem. “That’s what it’s about,” Lalas replied. “We love our country and we’ve taken this opportunity to keep it on a higher level.
